Today I was interviewed about my breast cancer and book, Rise, on BBC Radio 4’s PM programme. I told the host, Eddie Mair, why I have kept my illness private until now.

I said: “I tried to deal with it all myself because I didn’t want to visit it on other people. I didn’t want them to worry about me… I didn’t want to keep banging on about breast cancer.

“You’re worried about the impact of your own illness on other people, which was a reason for keeping it private, and I wanted to protect the family.”

You can listen to the full interview on BBC iPlayer.
